ROBERT and CATHERINE (SEVIER) TAYLOR

Robert Taylor, born between 1760 and 1770, arrived in Rhea County prior to 1818 when he was taxed for 100 acres on the Tennessee River (part of the 500-acre Taliferro Lewis survey between the mouth of Spring Creek and Richland Creek). His wife, Catharine (Sevier) Taylor, was born between 1770 and 1780.

They were married about 1795, possibly in Sullivan County, and had at least eight children:

ELIZABETH TAYLOR, born about 1796, married John Lillard about 1815. She died prior to 1835.

CINTHIA TAYLOR, born about 1800, married John Thompson Marriott, son of John and Mary (Thompson) Marriott, on November 11, 1819, in Rhea County. She died prior to 1848.

PEACH TAYLOR--see separate history.

ARCHIBALD TAYLOR, born about 1803, married Margaret Looney, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Childress) Looney, on March 5, 1827. Archibald and his family moved to Bradley County, Tennessee, where he died between 1850 and 1860.

MARY TAYLOR, born 1806, was never married. She died in Texas after 1860.

NANCY TAYLOR, born 1807, married James C. Airheart on February 3, 1831, in Rhea County. She died on February 2, 1884, in Bradley County.

LOUISA TAYLOR, born about 1810, married Larkin M. Gothard on July 28, 1830, in Rhea County. She died between 1870 and 1880.

LUCINDA TAYLOR, born about 1814, married Alexander Rice--see his history.

Robert's name appears only a few times in the Rhea County records (juror and road overseer). He died prior to 1840 (Catherine was listed as head-of-household on census), but Peach Taylor was not appointed Administrator of the estate until April 3, 1843. It is possible that Catherine died shortly after January 23, 1843, when she conveyed sundry property to her grandson, James M. Marriott (registered March 6, 1843). Robert and Catherine probably were buried in the cemetery located on their property. There are at least four graves marked only by field stones.

Since Robert died intestate, his property was owned jointly by all the heirs. In the late 1840's and early 1850's, Peach Taylor purchased the land from his brothers and sisters (or their descendants). These documents were invaluable in identifying the children of Robert and Catherine.
