"R.K. Wilson Sr.
Boy Scout leader

SHELBY – Robert Knox “R.K.” Wilson Sr., 86, of 210 Lee St., died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, in Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Edward Watkins and Minnie Lewis Wilson. He attended Shelby city schools and was a World War II veteran, U.S. Army Infantry.

Mr. Wilson was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Shelby and a member of the Paul Wilson Sunday School Class. He was a 50-year life member of American Legion Post No. 82 and was charter member of the Shelby Jaycees.
He was especially devoted to the Boy Scouts of America and was proud to be a Boy Scout. A charter member of Troop 104 at Central United Methodist Church, he was a founder of Cub Scout Pack 101 and a scout leader of Troop 101 at First Baptist Church.

Mr. Wilson served on the BSA Battleground District Committee at large and in 1966 he received a special award for 44 years of service working with the Boy Scouts as their director at the Cleveland County Fair. He retired in 1980 as manager after 40 years at Tillman’s Firestone (and Texaco) Inc. He was, for many years, an avid tennis player.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Clyde and Hubert Wilson; and three sisters, Laura Mae Freeman, Jean Stowe and Mary Lewis Laughridge.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mary Thompson Wilson of the home; two sons, a sister, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 5-6:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, c/o Piedmont Council., 1222 E. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, N.C. 28054; or to First Baptist Church, 120 N. Layfayette St., Shelby, N.C. 28150.

Mr. Wilson's kindness will long be remembered by those of us who worked near his home.
