Birth: Mar. 24, 1922
Audubon County
Iowa, USA
Death: Mar. 13, 2002
Cass County
Iowa, USA

Thelma was born at home in Audubon Co IA where she attended her first 1.5 years of school. The family moved to Cass Co where she attended school through the 8th grade.

She married Charles Sorensen in July 1940, but the marriage only lasted 3 months.

On Feb 1 1944, she married William Claussen. They moved to a farm in Adair on March 1 1944. In October of 1944, they moved to the family home in Anita. They had 4 children, Herm (1945), Frank (1947), Olinda (1950) and Bill (1952).

After William became incapacitated about 1963, Thelma held several jobs, including at the nursing home, the Atlantic hospital, and the local motel.

After being widowed for 4 years, Thelma married farmer Owen Keith Howell, from Massena on October 9, 1977. They worked his pig farm until Feb 1980 when Owen retired from farming and they moved back to the Claussen family home in Anita.

Until her last few years, Thelma was very outgoing and talkative. She was a hard worker, always had a large garden, always canning way more than she would ever use then giving bunches of it away. She never hesitated to jump in and help everyone, sometimes before they even knew they needed help LOL. She was renowned for her chocolate chip cookies, Christmas candies, huge ham dinners, and stories from the old days. She told the same stories over and over and over. I used to stop her and remind her that I had already heard that story, but she would just look at me with that big smile, then start over at the beginning. Was she trying to teach me a lesson, or did she just want to make sure we all remembered those stories?

There was always enough food on the table for whoever happened to drop by, and most times you would go home with lots of the leftovers.

On a mother's day card, my husband wrote "You **accidentally** do more for others than most people do when they try". She cried :)

Toward the end, the loss of her 3rd husband and all her old friends, and several mini-strokes had changed her. She was quiet. It became hard to engage her in conversation. She was satisfied to sit in a recliner and work search word puzzles and watch TV. It was sad to see her fade away. But so many of us will remember her until we die, and until then, we have lots of stories to tell over and over and over again to our kids!

I loved reading about your life. You were such an amazing person. A grave is only a grave but the story teller who wrote this made you real. Rest In Heavenly Peace dear lady.

I just realized it has been 9 years since we lost Mom. Sometimes it seems like it was just yesterday, sometimes it seems like decades. Miss her so much!
