Born in Canada to John and Christiana (Loop) Yerks.
Andrew immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was seventeen years old. The family lived in Miami County, Ohio for about 9 years. He helped his father and brothers work the family farm. The family then moved to Indiana around 1858 and Andrew learned the trade of a broom maker. He also farmed.
He married Rebecca Ann McBride on March 25, 1860 in Floyd County, Indiana. Togther they had four sons and four daughters. Sadly, Rebecca died four days after giving birth to their youngest child, William.
