Shawnee resident Esther Marie (Watson) Whittington, 92, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 14, 2013.

Born in May 1920 to Will and Lizzie (Bullard) Watson in Poteau, she was a devoted Christian and loving mother and grandmother.

Esther has lived in the Shawnee area for 35 years and was a poet whose poems have been published in the Shawnee News-Star many times. She is a retired Oklahoma state employee and has raised five children. Writing poetry was one of Esther's favorite hobbies. Her poems "Mom's Hand" and "the Old Porch Swing" were published by Quill Books in a volume titled "Down Peaceful Paths VIII."

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Jim, Carl, Oather and Ray Watson; sister, Bertha Brown; daughters, Rheta Toumbs and Janice Berkenbile; grandson, Jason Berkenbile; and great-granddaughter Hope Sisemore.

Survivors include children and spouses Harold and Shirley Whittington, Joyce and Jasper Painter, of Oklahoma City, Charles Whittington Jr. and wife Rhonda, of Shawnee; also a special son-in-law, Richard Toumbs of Newcastle. Esther left 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
