| Birth: | Aug. 5, 1818 | | Death: | Nov. 13, 1863 | Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He was born in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, and attended college in Jackson, Louisiana, and law school at the University of Virginia before returning home to Mississippi. There he worked as a planter and established a law practice in Woodville. When the Mexican War broke out in 1846, he joined Colonel Jefferson Davis' Mississippi Rifles as a First Lieutenant and was wounded in the Battle of Buena Vista. After the war he again returned home. Until 1861 he served as United States district attorney for southern Mississippi under President James Buchanan. When the Civil War began, he organized the Wilkinson Rifles but officially entered the Confederate service in Corinth, attached to the 16th Mississippi Infantry as a Colonel. With this regiment he served honorably in the Battles of Bull Run, Ball's Bluff, Second Bull Run, Harpers Ferry, and Antietam, after which he was promoted to Brigadier General on November 1, 1862,; later he fought at Fredericksburg. As commander of 4 Mississippi regiments, a part of Brigadier General Richard H. Anderson's division of Lieutenant General A.P. Hill's corps, he conducted himself with the gallantry for which he had always been distinguished at the Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He took a shell fragment in his thigh at Bristoe Station, Virginia, on October 14, 1863. After the engagement, members of his command transported him to Charlottesville, Virginia, to a doctor. Here he would die. Sadly, he was one of thousands who died of infected wounds during the war. (bio by: Ugaalltheway)
