Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Williamson County, Tennessee, in the Mexican War he was appointed Brigadier General of Tennessee Volunteers by President James K. Polk. With the advent of the Civil War, he was appointed Brigadier General in the Confederate Army, fought his first battle at Belmont, Missouri and at the Battle of Fort Donelson, in February 1862, which resulted in the surrender of his army. Due to his errors in the military operations at Fort Donelson, Confederate President Jefferson Davis suspended him from command. In December 1862, Pillow commanded a brigade at the Battle of Stones River, Tennessee and had no more combat assignments. For the remainder of the war, he commanded the Conscription Bureau of the Army of Tennessee and was the Commissary General of Prisoners in 1865. After the war, he became a lawyer and had a successful law practice in Memphis, Tennessee. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
