Douglass G. Washburn
MOUNT VISION — Douglass George Washburn, 82, of Mount Vision, left us on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Fox Hospital to be with the Lord.
He was born Oct. 15, 1919, in North Jackson, Pa., the son of Harold and Gladys (Wimple) Washburn.
He married Gertrude Yager on Dec. 2, 1939, in Hartwick. During WWII he worked as a machinist at the Scintilla plant in Sidney. He was an electrical and plumbing contractor for many years as well as working for the New Lisbon highway department. He managed the Elmore Feed Store in Morris for 19 years and most recently he was a security officer for Hartwick College, a position he held for 191/2 years.
Doug was well known for his love of hunting and the great outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gertrude; their children, Margaret Averall and her husband, Jeffrey of Mathews, N.C., Phyllis House and her husband, Harold, of Milford, N.Y., Richard Washburn and his wife Gloria of Farmington, N.Y., and William Washburn and his wife Wendy; a brother, Norman Washburn of Manakin, Va.; two sisters, Onley Kline of Edmeston, N.Y. and Mary Hungerford of Garrattsville, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; two stepgranddaughters; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Melvin Douglass Washburn, and a brother, Francis (Bud) Washburn, predeceased him.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Bible Baptist Church of Mount Vision on Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Chris Ellis officiating.
Committal services and interment will be in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.
It is requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad in loving memory of Douglass G. Washburn.
Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
