Born in Germany Township, the son of James & Martha Staley, he married Mary A. unk. and fathered Elvenia or Elmira R. (b. 03/11/48), Jeremiah J. (b. @1851), David Alexander (b. @1853), George William (b. @1854), Philip A. (b. @1855), Edmund F. (b. @1857), Joseph A. (b. @1859), Mary Elvina (b. 10/??/61 - married Milton H. Miller), Charles Henry (b. 04/03/63), Laura A. (b. @1866), and Hanson L. (b. @1868). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Germany Township and stood 5' 8" tall with light hair and gray eyes. He later worked as a carpenter.
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 6 as a private with Co. E, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg. He also enlisted in Gettysburg September 2, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 4 as a private with Co. G, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.
Mary's status is unknown, but he married Julia Ann unk. in 1883 and fathered Naima (b. 02/??/83).
