He moved to Alpine County about 1875, and married Mary Adeline Small on November 30, 1882.

William M. Thornburg served variously as a Deputy Sheriff, District Attorney, Justice of the Peace, and toll road operator. He died at the age of 63 of "lobar pneumonia." (Information from Alpine County Archives).
