Emporia Soldier Dies in Alabama

News has been received by Emporia relatives that Pvt. Theodore Morton, 24, of Emporia was killed Wednesday by an accidental shell explosion at Camp Rucker, Ala. Private Morton had been stationed at Camp Rucker for the past month. Previously he had been stationed in California. He left Emporia with Company B when the Emporia infantry unit left for Camp Robinson, Ark., on January 6, 1941. Later he was transferred to another unit.

The body will be brought to Emporia. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Private Morton is survived by his mother, Mrs. Glenn Zink, 627 Sylvan; his father, Richard L. Morton, of Route 1, on East Logan avenue; two brothers, Wendell Morton, 1013 Congress, and Sgt. Richard Morton, who is stationed in the Aleutians, and a sister. Mrs. Walter Dains, 627 Sylvan. He was born March 12, 1919, in Okmulgee, Okla., and came to Emporia in 1928. Pvt. Morton attended the Emporia High school and had worked for the Santa Fe.

Military Rites for Solider.

Funeral services for Pvt. Theodore Morton, Emporia solider who was killed last week at Camp Rucker, Ala., by an accidental shell explosion, will be held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Roberts-Blue Funeral home. The body arrived in Emporia on Santa Fe train No. 9 Sunday morning. Rev. J.C. Brogan, pastor of Grace Methodist church, will conduct the religious services, and military services will be in charge of Homer J. Ball post of the American Legion. Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery.

Rites for Theodore Morton

A military funeral was held Tuesday afternoon for Pvt. Theodore Morton, Emporia solider who was killed last week at Camp Rucker, Ala. The services were held in the Roberts-Blue Funeral home, with Rev. J.C. Brogan, pastor of the Grace Methodist church, conducting the religious rites. Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Gile sang, accompanied by Mrs. Glenn A. Blue. Homer J. Ball post of the American Legion was in charge of the military service. John Ryan served as chaplain, and Cpl. Harold MacMillen, who accompanied the body to Emporia from Camp Rucker, was color-bearer. The active pallbearers were service men in Emporia on furlough, part of them men who left Emporia with Private Morton when Company B went from here to Camp Robinson in January 1941. They were Gerald Tholen, Orville Hardesty, Howard K. Hillis, Darrel Satterfield, Glenn Richardson and Ralph Harrison. The honorary pallbearers, all veterans of the first World War, were W.D. Bitler, Ralph Moon, L.C. Greischar, George S. Groh, Roy Gannon, and John Knouse. Burial was in Maplewood cemetery. Members of the firing squad who were from the Emporia company of the Kansas State Guard, were Keith C. Rider, H.R. Seacat, Dean Williams, J. Parsons and Harold Davis. The buglers were George Keefer and Donald Koons.

Out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Miss Norma Hall, Santa Monica, Calf.; Cpl. Howard MacMillen, Camp Rucker, Ala.; Mrs. Lily Ramsey, Mrs. Logan Somers and family and Mrs. Hattie Burton, Wichita; Mrs. Bertha Essex, El Dorado; Mr. and Mrs.

Camp Rucker Soldiers Are Victims of Accidental Blast

CAMP RUCKER, Ala., May 7.--AP--The accidental detonation of a dud shell on the Camp Rucker firing range Tuesday caused the death of three enlisted men and injured seven others, including an officer, the Camp Public Relations Office reported today.

All the men were stationed at Camp Rucker.

Dead are Pvt. Edward Lee Tanner, 19, Atlanta, Ga., who had been in service since Jan. 15, 1943; Pvt. Donald T. Fredericks, 20, South Plainfield, N.J., in service since Jan. 21, 1943, and Pvt. Theodore F. Morton, 25, Emporia, Kas., in service since Dec. 23, 1940.

Next of kin have been notified, the Public Relations Office said.

The injured, now under treatment at the station hospital, are Pfc. Donald Arvidson, Montexuma, Ia.; Ovt. Theodore C. Holland, Barnesville, O.; Pvt. Albert Bonner, Corona, Ala.; Pvt. Steve G. Mardis, Wheeling, W. Va.; Private Leroy E. Kennedy, Louisville, Ky.; PPvt. Charles E. McGee, Independence, Ore.; and Second Lieut. Louis G. Xintas, Baltimore, Md.
