John C. Rice was born in Halifax County, Virginia on August 1, 1824, to James Rice and Mary T "Polly" Baker. John C had 6 siblings; Sarah (1818), Ann Catherine (1819) William March (1820), James S (1827), Mary L.M. (1829) and Peter Henry (1834)

John married Amanda J. Landrum in Halifax Co VA, on May 1, 1843. Together they had 7 children. The first child was Mary Elizabeth born in Virginia in 1844. Between 1844 and 1846 the family moved from Virginia to Tennessee, where Anna C (1846) and Richard T (1848) were born. From there the family moved to Callaway County, Missouri, where they had 4 more children; William James (1849), John Henry (1851), Amanda (1856), and Treesa J. (1857).

John owned and farmed a piece of land located in the South West corner of Callaway County near the city of Holts Summit, Mo. He and his family were life long Baptists and were members of the Union Hill Baptist Church in Holts Summit.

Amanda died of unknown causes circa 1857.

On August 16, 1860, John married widow Mary Elisabeth Harryman Coonce. Together they had 5 children. George (1861), Susan C. (1864), Joseph L (1866), Thomas Grant (1869) and Elizabeth Belle (1870). All of the children were born in Callaway County.

In the late 1870's, John C and Mary moved their family from Callaway County to Lynch Missouri, located in Texas County. Texas County Census records listed John as a farmer, and Mary as a housewife.

John C Rice died on June 4, 1888 in Upton Township, Texas Co. Missouri. According to the death records from the Texas County courthouse, John died of "Inflammation of the Bowels" and "Liver Failure". He had apparently been ill for 3 days prior to his death. Dr. Thomas Smith MD from Plato, Missouri was the attending physician. The record indicates that John was buried in the Rice cemetery in "Upton Township". The exact location of his grave is presently unknown. There is no record of a Rice cemetery in Upton Township. We believe that the burial took place in a family plot located on his farm.
