Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Campbell County, Virginia, he graduated from West Point in 1856, was commissioned an officer of artillery and served on the frontier. When the Civil War began, he resigned his commissioned and accepted a rank of Major, Chief of Artillery in the Provisional Army of Virginia. In March 1861, he was promoted Colonel and assumed the position as military secretary on General Robert E. Lee's staff. He served with Lee in all the major campaigns of Virginia and was promoted Brigadier General Chief of Artillery of the 2nd Army Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, in September, 1863. He commanded the artillery through the Overland Campaign, battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse and Shenandoah. In 1864, he rejoined General Lee's command and commanded his artillery corps until the surrender in April, 1865. After the war, he served as a civil engineer and wrote the book "Memoirs of Robert E.
