Marion Merante

WALTON Marion Etta Hall Merante of Walton died on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Roscoe Community Nursing home. She was 82.

She was born Jan. 29, 1919, in Richmondville to Dr. Ralph M. and Nellie M. Fox Hall.

Mrs. Merante was the director of nursing personnel at the East Point Nursing Home in Cold Spring until her retirement. Previously she worked at the Park Medical Center in Beacon, and was a nurse and office manager for her father, Dr. Ralph Hall, in Cold Spring.

She received her bachelor's degree in home economics from Syracuse University in 1941, and her master's from Yale School of Nursing in 1944.

On Oct. 22, 1955, she married Sylvester P. Merante in Cold Spring.

Mrs. Merante lived in Walton for the past 10 years. Previously she lived in Fishkill for five years and in Cold Spring for 60 years.

She was a member of the Cold Spring United Methodist Church, where she was a board member and church treasurer for 25 years, and Walton United Methodist Church; the Order of the Eastern Star, Phillipstown Lodge, where she was a matron and officer; the New York Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Phillipstown Community Council, where she was its treasurer. She was also a Red Cross volunteer.

Following a debilitating stroke, Marion knitted numerous afghans for community organizations and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Sylvester, of Walton; her son, the Rev. Ralph A. Merante; a daughter-in-law, Carol Merante; and grandsons, Caleb and Joshua, all of Shokan.

A service will be at 11 a.m. today at Ashokan United Methodist Church, Shokan. Interment will be in the Cold Spring Cemetery, Cold Spring.
