Eleanor McElwain was born about 1757 in Pa. She was a daughter of Nancy Rector McElwain, the first name of her father remains to be proven. Eleanor McElwain married Norton Gum about 1776 in Rockingham Co. Va. Norton Gum was the son of Jacob Gum and Sarah Claypoole and was named for his maternal great grandfather Norton Claypoole of London, England and Lewes Co.,Delaware. Norton Gum served in Lord Dunmore's War under the command of Capt. Benjamin Harrison, and also was sworn in by Isaac Lincoln as Constable of Rockingham Co. in 1783. Norton Gum died in 1789 at his homestead on Linville Creek in Rockingham Co., Va. Children of Norton Gum and Eleanor McElwain were: Abraham who married Mary Dick; Sarah who married Jacob Coffman; Nancy who married Dennis Bryant; Mary who married Robert Jackson; Phoebe who married James Stewart; Agnes who married Stephen Mackey II; Jehu who married Anna Shoup; and Norton Jr. who married Sarah Shoup. There is evidence of a 9th child named Benjamin who died at an early age. Eleanor McElwain married William Bailey as her second husband in 1793. Eleanor died at Linville Creek in 1796.
