Civil War Confederate Major General. He graduated from West Point in 1825, as an officer in the 3rd Artillery and served as Chief of Ordnance under General Winfield Scott during the Mexican War. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was commissioned Colonel of artillery in the Confederate Army and was assigned the defensive responsibilities for North Carolina and Virginia. In October 1861, he was promoted Major General and in May 1862, at Roanoke Island, he failed to reinforce his command and had to surrender to the Union Expeditionary Force. He later led divisions in several of the Seven Days Battles and for criticized leadership was relieved of duty by General Robert E. Lee in July 1862. In 1863, he was appointed Chief of Ordnance for the Trans-Mississippi Department and remained in post until the war's end. After the war he worked as a farmer in Virginia and North Carolina.
