Raised in Massachusetts and educated in public schools, Horace moved to Suffield, Connecticut when he was eighteen and went into the farming and general merchandise business. Horace married Ellen Lyman on January 15, 1873 and in 1887, they relocated to Hollywood - the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Cahuenga. There he built a three-story hotel with twenty-eight rooms and on the ground floor, he had room for three general merchandise stores. He opened a general store and was very successful in the business until he sold his store in 1909. He and his wife had five children.
