My Grandfather had a much disputed beginning. They say he was born in Wisconsin. After many years of family tree research I found he was born in Ireland just as my father said he was. His mother was born in Germany and his father, I forget? My records are all in storage. He came to the United States as a young adult and then again left to Merchant Sea life. There he injured his leg in the boiler room of a ship. He limped ever since. He was in silent films too! He went by the name of: Jack something or another. I have to find that last name again. My only info came from my Aunt Dot whom passed away a few months ago so I can't call her now! My grandfather also was an excellent cook. He was a chef in Hollywood as well. My Nana, (his wife) said he only spoke little broken English, he mostly spoke German although I am sure he would of known the Gaelic language coming from Ireland. Few people speaking that language would account for his never using it. My grandmother (Nana) said as a young guy in Ireland, he was a paid Story Teller.I had heard of people who did that for a living. He was for a time in silent films under the name "Jack Martin". My grandfather was married once before my Nana but those infos are yet to be documented. I know he had a famous sister in New Orleans who was a Criminal Attorney but all that is information I have not been able to get accurate names on. It was said he had a daughter in New Orleans with the name of Olga born about 1900. It would be great if one day I could provide all of this. I am his eldest grandchild by his second oldest son: Wallace Ralph Spalding.
Odd that none of my father's siblings and himself even knew my grandfather used the U in the last name as my Nana and dad and aunts and uncle did not have the U in Spalding. Funny huh> The things you find out. He died of Heart disease.
Once I was told he had no headstone. Also I was told by the cemetery that it was only one of those small cement markers and that when they refurbished the cemetery that they think that maybe his marker was not even correct that maybe someone else is at his marker place and that he is at anther...? As well he has himself listed on his death certificate and in the cemetery office as: Spaulding not Spalding. My father and his siblings didn't even know he used the u in his last name. I have never been able to get concrete information on his parents and grandparents. Just that his parents both came from Europe. That his mother's maiden name was either Brookmiller or Brockmuller.Dorothy Anna Maria Brookmiller or Brockmuller. His father's name was Edward Henry Spalding or Spaulding. Edward was supposed to of been a blacksmith.? Wish I could afford an ansestry.com membership! It would all be so easy then.
Auda Pearl Powers Spalding (1904 - 1981)*
Carl Paul Spalding (1928 - 1970)*
Wallace Ralph Spalding (1930 - 2015)*
Elizabeth Louise Spaulding Taylor (1932 - 2005)*
Lorelei Spalding Spalding (1934 - 2009)*
Dorothy Marilyn Spalding Witt (1937 - 2013)*
Note: The cemeter said he has no headstone, only a number. Sad, Also that when they were re doing the cemetery, that they think they may of even miss placed his exact place and that the marker might even be someone else.
