Matthew Key is listed in the Queen's survey in 1600. Margaret was the daughter of Antony Bates. She had two brothers, John Bates, born in 1569, and Thomas Bates, born in 1562. The following is an extract from the Survey in 1600:
A cottage and its site containing 1r and 2 crofts lying in Lowe field containing 1 acre of arable land with common pasture in proportion as when held by Antony Bates, for 2s. 5d. yearly. 3O June, 15 Eliz(1573). By a fine of 16s 6d, Margaret, Countess of Lennox, demised the premises to Antony Bates for 21 years at yearly rent of 2s 5d. In his will, Antony Bates left the premises to Matthew Key, who assigned the same to Guy Foster to the use of Matthew and his assigns. The cottage sometime in the tenure of Antony Bates standeth upon 3 pair of forks
Antony Bates received his land by indenture to the Countess with 8 years of sufferance and with the demise of the Countess in 1571. Matthew and Margaret had four children: Agnes, John, Jane, Andrew.
