Birthe was named for her paternal grandmother, Birthe Marie NIELSEN Hansen. She was the oldest child out of nine (7 lived past infancy) of Niels Hansen (04 Nov 1857-16 Jul 1941) and Ottoline Dideriekke Madsen AAGAARD Hansen(26 Oct 1855-13 May 1911) both from Denmark.
Birthe (Bertha) met and married William Alvin Ward 08 Jul 1903 in Neola, Iowa. Together they would have three children (Floyd Marines Ward, Elsie Vivenia WARD O'Brien, and Eugene Alvin Ward.
Birthe was six months pregnant with Floyd M. Ward when she finally married William Alvin Ward. Niels Hansen, Bertha's father, was none too happy about that situation and never forgave his son-in-law. It was Niels who held up the marriage until just before her first child was born. They were married on Niels Hansen's front porch.
Birthe (Bertha) Mae HANSEN Ward was left a widow, early in life, her husband died in a tractor accident. She was always a hard-working self-sufficient woman. There is a story that for a short period of time she cleaned houses and took in laundry after she lost her husband and the farm in 1936. Otto Hansen, one of her brothers, and the rest of the Hansens were none too happy about the situation and decided to have a "reunion" which served as a time to place Bertha in the Harrison Street house in Council Bluffs, Iowa (which she rented some of it out ) and gave her the income of some oil wells during her lifetime. She used a "push mower" to cut her grass well into her 80's.
