He is a son of George Sanders Whitney and Mary Eveline (Barnard) Whitney.

Children - Lovina Ellen Whitney; Luella Mae Whitney; Mary Maudeen Whitney; Stowell Edward Whitney; Jane Whitney; Ralph Emanuel Whitney; Chrissie Eveline Whitney; Burton Levi Whitney; George Luke Whitney; Mabel Clara Whitney

At 18 years of age George decided to "go West." The mines were booming in Nevada and he landed in Pioche September 15, 1871, the night a fire burned most of the town. He worked at Bullionville, but not being a Mormon, he wasn't allowed to go to the dances or other entertainments. He cut and hauled wood to the miens. After someone stole his horses he went to work for Luke Syphus. Soon after he met Luke's daughter, Lovina, he joined the Mormon Churchm and he and Lovina were married.

In 1893 they moved to St. Thomas where George taught school. They lived in the old Bonelli home where the Saints gathered for church services. School was held in a boarded up tent for two years, then it was held in the front room of the Moses and Lizzie Gibson home. There was only one ward of the LDS Church at that time, and it was in Overton. George was made counselor to Bishop Jones. He was also sent to the Nevada State Assembly to help write the original school laws for the state.
