He was born in 1863 as Ritske Tuinstra in the village Marum, in the western part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, named for his grandfather Ritske Rapkes Tuinstra and the only child of the 24 years aged laborer Pieter Tuinstra and the 23 years aged Maaike Bakker, who died five weeks after Ritske's birth, on 10 September 1863, in Marum.

His father Pieter Tuinstra remarried in 1870 in Marum to the three years younger Bauktje Hoogstra. They emigrated in 1892 with their children Riemkje (21 y, servant), Hendrik (16 y, laborer) and Wiebe (9 y) from the village De Wilp, municipality Marum to Chicago, Illinois, USA. Ritske stayed in De Wilp, but emigrated in 1910 with his family also to the USA.

Laborer Ritske Tuinstra married on 28 July 1888 in Marum at the age of 24 years to the also 24 years aged Renskje Palsma, born in De Wilp, daughter of skipper Roelf Palsma and Grietje Jager.

From mid 1890 until October 1900 they got in De Wilp their children Maaike (1890), Grietje (1892), Pietje (1894) [Nellie Vierstra, died in 1963 in CA, USA], Roelf (1896-June 1900), Pieter (1898) [Peter, died in 1945 in Chicago] and Roelf (October 1900) [Ralph, died in 1985 in Kalamazoo, MI, USA]. Ritske was in all those years a laborer.

Ritske Tuenstra (46 y), his wife Renske (46 y), their children Piety (15 y), Pieter (11 y) and Roelof (9 y) arrived on 27 April 1910 on the SS Rotterdam at the port of New York, Ellis Island.

In 1920 Richard Tuinstra (56 y), his wife Renska (56 y), their children Peter (21 y), Ralph (19 y), Nellie [Pietje Tuinstra] Vierstra (25 y) and son-in-law Jacob Vierstra (38 y) resided in the former Dutch truck gardeners' settlement Roseland, Pullman Street, in the southern part of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois

Richard and Renska Tuinstra, both 66 years aged, resided in 1930 with their 31 years aged son Peter still in Chicago.

His wife Renska died in 1935 in Chicago at the age of 71 years, truck gardener Richard died there in 1940 at the age of 77 years.
