George was born in Brush Creek Township, Highland County, Ohio July 12, 1831, the ninth of fourteen children born to Eli and Mary Franklin Jarnagin. He died July 24, 1908 in Victory Township, Guthrie County, Iowa and was interred in Brethern Cemetery in Panora, Iowa. In 1837 George moved from Ohio to Randolph County, Indiana. At the age of 16 he ran away from home and enlisted in Company H, Indiana First Infantry Regiment, serving in the Mexican War. George was discharged in February of 1849. He was married to Nancy Jane "Minnie" Kent on October 5, 1854 in Green Township, Randolph County, Indiana. George and Nancy moved to Guthrie County, Iowa in 1867, settling 120 acres which he had acquired on the South Raccoon River, near Stuart, in Penn Township. In 1879 he traded this land for a farm on Section 13, Victory Township, where he engaged in farming and stock-raising until retiring in 1895. Politically he was a stalwart Republican. George and Nancy Jane "Minnie" had five daughters and five sons born between 1855 and 1877. Two of the first five children died before the family moved to Iowa, and one daughter died of diphtheria in Iowa in 1881 at age 18. George was survived by the remaining seven children: Teresa Couch, Frederick, Chester, Cora Lakin, Margaret Mathison, William and Beryl Kent.
