Actress. She was a popular British character performer of both stage and screen. Known mainly for her roles as queens, dowagers and evildoers she appeared in many silver screen and stage productions. Amongst her movies were "The Mill on the Floss" (1937), "Great Expectations" (1946), "The Brides of Dracula" (1960), "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" (1964)and "The Best House in London" (1969). She won Broadway's 1949 Tony Award as Best Actress (Dramatic) for "The Madoman of Chaillot."
