Maryland was a Catholic state in colonial America. Eventually, some of those Catholics began migrating to Kentucky and to Missouri. Then, some Catholic families heard about the league of land that was to be given to you in Texas, if you were a married man, and 1/3 of league, if you were single. To be a colonist entering Texas, though, you had to be of the Catholic faith because the Mexican government would not allow any other religions to be established.

BERNARD BROWN and wife, ANN RINEY, arrived in Texas in 1831 and purchased town lots in the town of Gonzales and lived there until they selected and was granted a league of land adjoining the Lavaca River from the Mexican government; said league located in Lavaca County, Texas. After the Texas Revolution, Bernard was reissued the same league from the Republic of Texas. Bernard Brown donated from his league, land for St. Mary's Catholic Church and Cemetery and the area became known as the Brown Settlement. Later, it became known as St. Mary's Community.
