George A. Smothers was the son of James and Elizabeth (Swisher) Smothers. He was married first to Katherine Spellman and was the father of George Richard "Dick" Smothers, and Ann Josephine "Jo" (Smothers) McAlister. He was married second to Carrie Clausen Olson.


Smothers, George 75, of 104 Sixth S.W. died at a Mason City nursing home Saturday evening following a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Holy Family Catholic Church, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr Arthur J. Breen officiating.
The Rosary will be said at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Colonial Chapel.
Colonial Funeral Home is in charge.


G. Smothers Rites Held at Church

Funeral services for George Smothers, 75, who died Saturday following an illness, were held Wednesday at the Holy Family Catholic Church with the Father John Reed officiating.
Roger Hoffman was Crossbearer. Alter boys were James Frank and Thomas Skram.
Attending the services from out of the city were Mr. and Mrs. William McAlister and Robert, Austin Minn; Richard Smothers, Mankato Minn; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Olson, St. Ansgar Iowa; Mrs. Vernie Ihns, Mrs. Clara M. Viktora, and Mrs. Harold Eggerich, Chester Iowa; Fred Stanke, Waseca Minn; and Mr. and Mrs. Erhart Stanke, Mankato Minn.
Pallbearers were Harold Eggerich, Charles Murphy, Robert Stinezi, Vernell Whittrock, Leo Wiese and Melton Graff.
Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery.
The Colonial Funeral Home was in charge.

"Just wanted to let you know that we visited George Smothers' grave back in the 1980's when we first found where he was buried. He is in the 'old age benefit' section of the cemetery and has no formal marker on his grave. As I recall it was just a very small marker with a number on it."
