Born in Cleveland, Ohio, during World War I, he was an officer in the 77th Field Artillery, France, participating in the Aisne-Marne, St. Michael and Meuse-Argonne offensives. Promoted Brigadier General in September 1942, in World War II, he was commander of the 9th Armored Division in North Africa, 1942 to 1944, Chief of Public Relations Officer at General Eisenhower's headquarters and Commanding General of the 3rd Armored Division in 1945. He retired from active service a Major General in November 1956. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, three Silver Stars, Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Stars and two purple Hearts.
