Busnessman. Born in Baker, Oregon, he was a one of the pioneer manufacturers of the American travel trailer. In 1929, Byam built the world's first Airstream trailer, which started out as a tent contraption built on a Ford Model T chassis. The tent was replaced with a masonite teardrop-shaped permanent shelter and he added a stove and ice chest. In Los Angeles, California, he started building travel trailers and his Airstream Company was incorporated in 1931. By the late 1930s, he introduced the "Clipper" a aluminum teardrop trailer, which was an instant hit with travelers and campers. Developing a full line of popular aluminum jet stream follow trailers, they became one of the most recognizable products worldwide by the mid 1950s. He managed and directed his company until his death at age 66.
