| Birth: | 1732 | | Death: | Jun. 23, 1775 Boston Suffolk County Massachusetts, USA | British Revolutionary War Army Officer. A veteran of the Seven Years War, he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army when the Revolutionary War broke out. During the British occupation of Boston, Massachusetts in 1775, and in the later siege there, he was served as Adjutant General to British Army commander General Thomas Gage. When General Gage decided to attack Colonial positions on Breed's Hill on June 17, 1775, Lieutenant Colonel Abercrombie detailed as part of the assault, having been given command of a battalion of grenadiers. In the final assault carried out by the British in the subsequent battle (known to history as the Battle of Bunker Hill), he was shot in the right thigh while leading his men, and was carried off the field (tradition has it that the shot was fired by an African-American, Salem Poor). Lieutenant Colonel Abercrombie later died of his wound at the home of army engineer John Montressor. (bio by: Bob on Gallows Hill)
