Margaret Anderson Zachry-Killeffer passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at her home on Signal Mountain.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and Signal Mountain.

Born in 1917 to the late Ike A. and Madge Clouse Anderson, she graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1935 and the University of Chattanooga in 1939, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

She was a career elementary teacher, teaching every grade from kindergarten through eighth grade, with the majority of her service being in kindergarten through third grade. She taught at St. Luke's United Methodist kindergarten, Signal Mountain, Bachman, Red Bank and Thrasher elementary schools. Her career spanned two generations. She had a special love for children and unique gift of communication with them. Her love of life and native curiosity were evident in her work with her students and in all aspects of her life.

An avid violinist, Margaret played in various orchestras throughout her life and, in later years, was a member of the Chattanooga Senior Neighbors Orchestra.

Margaret was active in many church and community organizations. She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church for many years, where she and husband, Bill, were members of the Runyan Class. In the early and later years of her life, Margaret was an active member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, having attended the groundbreaking of the original church building. She was also a longtime member of the Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club and the Altrusa International Club.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William H. Zachry; and second husband, Dr. John Killeffer; sister, Ruth Gross and husband, Sam; sister, Mary Sue Adams; and brother, Jack Anderson.

Margaret is survived by two sons, Dr. William H. Zachry and wife, Lynda, of Memphis, and Dr. John A. Zachry and wife, Shirley, of Chelmsford, Mass.; one daughter, Martha Ellen Craig and husband, Ron, of Signal Mountain; grandsons, Will Zachry and wife, Jacquie, of Chesapeake Beach, Md., Drew Zachry, of New York City, Jonathan Craig and wife, Elizabeth, of Houston, and Kevin Craig, of Orlando, Fla.; granddaughter, Meg Zachry, of Bartlett, Tenn.; great-granddaughter, Mackenzy Zachry, of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; cousin, Jane Moore, of Silverdale, Tenn.; brother-in-law, David and wife, Deannie, Zachry, of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, in the Marr Chapel at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bill Dudley officiating.

Visitation will follow the service at the church and burial will be at Chattanooga Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Hospice of Chattanooga, St. Marks United Methodist Church, or Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church.
