He served during the Civil War in the 61st New York Volunteer Infantry, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the regiment. He led the unit as it fought in the Wheatfield on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 2, 1863). He commanded a brigade during the Union's 1864 siege of Petersburg, Virginia, and was wounded in the shoulder at the Battle of Reams Station (August 25, 1864). He was honorably mustered out in October 1864, and was brevetted Colonel, US Volunteers for "good conduct through the campaign, and particularly for distinguished service at Reams Station, Virginia".
