From the Reno Evening Gazette, Wednesday, April 12, 1950:
Mexico Melon Flight Child Dies From Cancer
Sharon Angeli, four-year-old cancer sufferer, whose wish for watermelon in February brought two of them by air from Mexico to her bedside, died today.
Little Sharon expressed the wish for the melon about mid-February. Two Reno housewives quickly contributed canned watermelon balls when a friend of the child's family made her desire known to the local chamber of commerce.
Braniff International, American, and United Airlines cooperating, two watermelons were flown into Reno the night of February 25 to appease the dying child's hunger. The chamber of commerce passed Sharon's request along.
Sharon was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ugo Angeli. Her identity was not publicly disclosed during the watermelon campaign. She was born October 16, 1945 in Reno, and had suffered for a long time from the disease.
