OBITUARY: 1918 Oct. 3. Thursday The Bluffton News, p. 1, Col.5 Pioneer Resident 84 Dies Monday Night. Funeral Thursday for Mrs. Elizabeth Murray Who Lived in Bluffton for 80 years. Mrs. Elizabeth Murray, for 80 years a resident of Bluffton passed away at her home on Jackson Street, Monday evening at 9:30 o'clock, aged 84 years, 2 months, and 19 days. Death followed a paralytic stroke from which she suffered for the past week. Funeral services will be held at her home Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and at the Lutheran church one- half hour later conducted by Rev. A.A. Hundley. Interment will be made in Maple Grove cemetery. Mrs. Murray was born in Wayne County, July 11, 1834, the daughter of Jacob and Sabina Deppler. She came to Allen County with her parents when a small child, locating on a farm 2 miles west of town. Later she moved to town with her parents and attended school here. During her life she witnessed the development of the town almost from its very beginning. On August 17, 1859 she was married to Joseph Murray who preceded her in death Dec. 17, 1906. To this union 9 children were born, 7 of whom survive. A son, one of the Murray quadruplets, died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Wm. H. Bates passed away in 1895. Three sisters and one brother have also preceded her in death. The surviving children are Mrs. T. H. Mohler, Mrs. Fred Triplehorn, Lloyd, Medlow, Monroe, Horace G., all of Bluffton, and Mrs. L.N. Bassett of Springfield, MO. Twenty-three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. For many years Mrs. Murray was a consistent member of the Lutheran church, attending services when her physical condition permitted. In her passing, Bluffton loses another of the few surviving pioneers who recall the early days of Shannon. She was a faithful wife and mother and respected and esteemed by all who knew her.
