Charles M. Berry sailed around Cape Horn from Maine to California in 1849. He spent a year working in the gold mines, then moved to Oregon in October 1850. He took up 320 acres of land in Yamhill county where he engaged in general farming and carpentry. He also operated a small sash and door factory which was water-powered, on Berry Creek, about 200 yards southwest of his house. He married Rebecca Lemasters on May 18, 1853. From this union there were four children; Charles A., John, Maine and Susan Ann.
