Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in McMinnville, Warren County, Tennessee, he was commissioned a Colonel in the Confederate Army in September 1861, after organizing the 35th Tennessee Infantry regiment. Initially, this unit had easy service, but in the spring of 1862, the unit was made a part of General Patrick Cleburne's Brigade at the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, after which he was commended for his gallantry. In the Kentucky campaign of 1862, he commanded Cleburne's Brigade, when Cleburne was temporarily moved up to Division command. At the December 1862 Battle of Murfreesboro, Colonel Hill, again in command of the regiment, was in the severest part of the battle. In the September 1863 Battle of Chickamauga, Lieutenant General D. H. Hill praised him in his official battle report, saying, "The extraordinary merit of Colonel Hill of the 35th Tennessee came under my personal observation. This noble office has been distinguished on many a hard-fought field, and has been content with a subordinate position, provided he can serve his country." At Missionary Ridge in November 1863 , Cleburne's Division held its ground despite numerous attacks, and during this battle, Colonel Hill commanded both the 35th and 48th Tennessee Regiments. In late 1863 and 1864, he was made the Provost Marshal of the Army of Tennessee. In the Tennessee campaign of General John Bell Hood, he commanded a cavalry force and worked with Lieutenant General Nathaniel B. Forrest in the siege of Murfreesboro. On November 30, 1864, he was promoted to Brigadier General, and fought at the Battle of Decatur, Alabama in April 1865. Following the end of the war, he retired to his hometown of McMinnville, Tennessee, where he died in 1880. (bio by: Kit and Morgan Benson)
