Grace Margaret Fairbanks Kohl. She was born 22 February 1895 in Quebec, Canada to George Adolphus (24 April 1855 (1851?) Halifax, Nova Scotia – 1911 Guelph, Wellington, Ontario) and Edith Levrette (nee Hutton; 19 May 1866 Quebec – 1924 Montreal, Quebec) Kohl, who had married in 1887 in the Anglican (Church of England) tradition. Grace’s known siblings were Madeline, b. 5 May 1888, George, b. 21 December 1889, and Cornelia, b.16 July 1892. The Kohl family belonged to the Church of England. In 1911 she lived in Montreal with her family. She had in fact just visited England and left Liverpool, England, 17 April 1914 on the Empress of Ireland (that time captained by J. A. Murray), and came to Halifax, Nova Scotia, 24 April. She had been to England with her mother and her sister Cornelia and stayed in Canada for just one month before starting another journey to Europe. She was on her way to Surrey, England, to visit an aunt and had booked passage as a first class passenger on the Empress of Ireland. She was one of the first on deck after the collision, she thought. A stewardess had awakened her and she hurried upstairs. There were only a few passengers there and no boats had been lowered when she came on deck. Miss Kohl stood on deck with the stewardess until convinced the ship would sink and then jumped into the sea. She was able to swim and was picked up after a few minutes in the water. The Canadian Pacific Railway reported that Miss Kohl returned to Montreal after the disaster. She seems to have married a Richard H. Mather in 1916 in Marylebone, London, England. She died 19 April 1976 in Hempstead, Quebec, Canada.
