American Businessman. He will be best remembered as the founder of USA Today. The newspaper became one of the most circulated publications in the United States. Born Allen Harold Neuharth, to parentage of German descent, his father died when Al was two years old leaving his mother to raise him and his older brother. During World War II, he served with the United States Military as an infantry man and upon his return home, he enrolled at the University of South Dakota with the aid of the G.B. Bill. He initiated his career as a journalist with the Associated Press and pursued his goal of establishing his own newspaper. He founded a sports-oriented publication in his native South Dakota which managed to stay in business for a few years. During the mid 1950s, he moved to Florida and resumed his career as a reporter now with the Miami Herald and by the end of the decade he rose through the ranks of the newspaper industry. In 1960, he became assistant editor of the Detroit Free Press and three years later, he landed a position with the Gannett Company for which ran several newspapers. Neuharth went onto become president and CEO of Gannett during the 1970s. After conceiving the concept of a newspaper for which was to sell nationwide, USA Today came to fruition in 1982. (bio by: C.S.)

Al, you old SOB, I just learned in August that you passed away last April. How'd I miss that? Rest in peace. Hope you're on the right side of the tracks in heaven.
