May Alice Sheller was the daughter of John Sheller and Ruth Shrewsbury. Her paternal grandparents were Jacob Sheller and Lydia Hake. Lydia was the daughter of Frederick Hake and Nancy Danner,

Jefferson was an artist. In 1935 the family was living in Port Orford, Oregon and in 1940 they were living in Long Beach, California.
