| Birth: | Jun. 8, 1824 | | Death: | Jun. 16, 1901 |  Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He was serving in the Union Army as a Captain, when he resigned to except a commission as Colonel of the 8th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. At the First Manassas Battle, he was wounded but recovered and was promoted Brigadier General. From November 1861 to November 1863, he was put in command of the District of Middle Florida and participated at the Battle of Olustee. In 1864, he was assigned to command all military prisons east of the Mississippi and at Richmond, Virginia, serving until the end of the war. After the War, Gardner lived near Augusta, Georgia for a time, then in Memphis, Tennessee.
