Born between 1846-1850 in Amherst county, Virginia. Place and year of death unknown.
We have spent years trying to identify this William, son of Thomas Spencer Norvell and Mary Jane Dameron. The following notes are from what little public data is available plus some "best guesswork":

July 20 1863. Malachi Dameron and George H. Dameron post a guardianship bond for $1,200. stating that "Malachi Dameron, guardian of William Norvell, orphan of Thomas Norvell dec'd will faithfully execute the duties of his office as guardian."
There were no other guardianship bonds for any other children of Thomas Norvell, so we assume that if there was a second son (listed in Dameron genealogy) he was dead before 1863.

September 26, 1863: (Amherst county probate book 17-112) William Norvell is listed as heir of Mary E. Dameron, deceased.

William Norvell would have been born shortly before 1850 according to the 1850 census of Amherst County, Eastern District, family #782, where he was listed as 1 year old. His mother died in 1852 (per Dameron genealogy) probably shortly after the birth of their second son. Thomas, his father, died before 1863.

The 1860 census of Amherst county does not list a Thomas Norvell with any sons. Neither is there a William Norvell enumerated in the family of Malachi Dameron. It is believed that William Norvell went to Pike county, Missouri after the death of his mother, as he was enumerated there in 1860 as a 9-year old boy in the family of Andrew Jackson and Margaret Calhoun. Margaret's maiden name was Norvell. She and Andrew were married in Amherst county in 1853. From the ages and birthplaces of their children in the 1860 census, they moved to Pike county about 1856 and took William with them. If Margaret was a sister of Thomas S. Norvell, young William wouldl have been her nephew.
Living near the Calhoun family in Pike county, Missouri in 1860 were the families of Thomas, Hugh and Spencer Norvell - all from Virginia.

Lincoln county, Missouri (next-door to Pike county) records show a Thomas W. Norvell, whose estate was probated in January 1871. His heirs were James M. Norvell, Luisa, wife of Levi W. Luckett and Malachi Norvell.
Lincoln count marriage records show: Malachi Norvell to Susan Van Clervalle June 6, 1872; Robert B. Norvell to Mary Ann Estes on Nov. 19, 1873; Washington Norvell to Judith Ware Sept. 3, 1840 and Elizabeth Norvell to John H. Ferguson Jan. 8, 1844. Most -if not all- of these Pike and Lincoln county Norvell families appear to have come from Virginia. We have not yet definitely identified them as the same listed in Amherst county records.

We would love to hear from other Norvell researchers.
