| Birth: | Mar. 2, 1900 | | Death: | Apr. 4, 1950 |  Composer. Born in Dessau, Germany, he was composing concerts and dramatic works by the age of 12. By 1925, a series of performances in Berlin and at international music festivals established him as one of the leading composers of the generation. In 1937, he recolated to the United States and for the next decade, he established himself as a new and original voice in the American musical theater. For his works, he was elected as the only composer-member of the distinguished Playwrights Producing Company in 1943 and teamed up with producer with Alan Jay Lerner for many original musicals and operas on Broadway. For Hollywood, his musical scores were used in films to include "Where Do We Go from Here?" (1945), "Love Life" (1948) and "Down in the Valley" (1948).
