| Birth: | Jun. 23, 1801 | | Death: | Apr. 17, 1863 |  Civil War Confederate Major General. A graduate of the US Military Academy in 1825, he was Brigadier General of the Tennessee Militia, 1829 to 1834. From 1841 to 1843 and 1855 to 1861, he was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives. When Tennessee seceded from the Union in May 1861, he was commissioned Brigadier General in the Army of the Confederate States. In 1862, at the Battle of Murfreesboro, he commanded the 1st Brigade of the 1st Army Corps to victory over the Federal Army. Promoted Major General in January 1863, he was assigned to command the Confederate War Department of East Tennessee. While in position as senior officer of the Tennessee War Department, he died of natural causes.
