Wilburn Boyd Reece was born in Erath County, Texas, the son of Wilburn Sr. and Maude (Shelnutt) Reece. He was the eldest of five brothers and sisters, and excelled in athletics in high school and college in the early 1920's, winning several track awards. He was married to Opal (Griffin) Reece for fifty years, and they had a son and daughter, and a large extended family. To support his family during the Depression, they moved to West Texas in the 1930's, where they made their permanent home in San Angelo. He loved reading, and with his wife, deeply enjoyed fishing on the lakes of West and Central Texas.
