Martin Helge Buer was born on October 25, 1911 in Jamestown, Kansas, the son of Carrie (Tiller) and Helge Buer. Martin's early years were spent in Kansas and Garretson, South Dakota area until his family moved to the Diamond Lake area and settled at the Bass Lake Farm. He was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church near Spicer and received his education at the District 27 rural school at Diamond Lake. In the early 1930's they moved to the Ridgewood Farm north of Atwater where he farmed and raised Hereford cattle with his brother Melvin. Martin received many awards for showing the cattle. On June 24, 1939, at the United Methodist Church in Atwater, he was married to the love of his life Annette Marie Berg. They made their home on the Ridgewood Farm before moving to a farm west of Atwater in 1954. In 1971 Martin and Annette moved to town, yet he continued farming with his sons until the age of 95.

Martin was active in his community and long time member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was a past President of the Southwest Minnesota Hereford Association and a member of the American Hereford Association, Kandiyohi County Fair Board, Farm Bureau, and the Atwater Creamery and Soil Center where he also served as president for many years. He loved being with family and friends and was often called upon to give rides to those who needed them. He will be remembered as a man of integrity who always treated people with kindness and respect.

He is survived by 4 sons. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren and 2 sisters; Doris Knutson of Minneapolis and Darleen Hovey of Atwater.
