Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. When the Civil War began, he was a Major in the Alexandria Artillery, was promoted Colonel and assigned commander of the 17th Virginia Regiment. He took part in the battles of Manassas, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Seven Pines and Richmond. He was wounded at the second Battle of Manassas, but returned to participate in the Maryland Campaign and at the head of his regiment in Antietam. In November 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General and commanded a division at Fredericksburg. In 1863, he accompanied General James Longstreet at the Battle of Chancellorsville and at the Gettysburg Campaign. Through 1864, he participated in General Pickett's operations against New Bern, North Carolina and rejoined the Army of Northern Virginia and fought at Cold Harbor and the siege of Petersburg. At the Battle of Saylor's Creek on April 6, 1865, General Corse was captured and surrendered his forces. He with fourteen other Confederate Generals were sent to Fort Warren Prison, Massachusetts. After his release from Fort Warren he returned to Alexandria, Virginia and engaged in the banking business until his death. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
