| Birth: | Jul. 27, 1812 | | Death: | Nov. 3, 1897 |  Civil War Confederate Brigadier General, Senator and US Congressman. He was a member of the North Carolina State Senate when elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth Congress, serving, 1843 to 1845. In 1847, he was reelected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress and to the five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1858. In 1858, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served until he resigned to support North Carolina seceding from the Union in 1861. During the Civil War, he served as a Confederate Army Brigadier General and was wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia, in May 1864, which ended his active military service.
