Johann Christoph Pepusch
Birth: 1667
Death: Jul. 20, 1752

Composer. Born in Berlin, a son of a Protestant clergyman, Pepusch [also known in England as John Christopher] was appointed to the Prussian Court at the age of 14. He was a prolific composer of theatrical music, church music and instrumental works. In 1700 he moved to London where he was first employed as a viola player and later as harpsichordist at the Drury Lane Theatre. There he collaborated in the production of a series of masques. Among these was Venus and Adonis, the success of which did much to establish his reputation in the London musical world. Pepusch was awarded the degree of Doctor of Music at Oxford in 1713. He also helped to found the Academy of Ancient Music. In 1735, he became its director. Pepusch is strongly associated with John Gay's The Beggar's Opera to which he contributed the overture. He served for about 20 years as musical director to the Duke of Chandos at Cannons, and wrote a great deal of church music for the chapel there. He died in 1752 and was buried in The West of London and Westminster Cemetery now known as Brompton Cemetery. (bio by: Iola)
