Statesboro , Ga. — Dr. Hudson John Powell, Sr., age 59, died early Saturday at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. He was a native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County, an honor graduate of Statesboro High School, class of 1972, and graduated magna cum laude from Georgia Southern College in 1975 with a B.S. in Biology. In 1978, Dr. Powell received his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree from the Medical College of Georgia and was given the International College of Dentistry Award while there. He practiced dentistry for 35 years in Statesboro before retiring in 2012. Hudson received the "David Turner" Citizenship Award and was voted Most Valuable Player in both football and basketball in his senior year at Statesboro High School. He was awarded an Academic/Athletic Scholarship to Eckerd College and in 1972 he was inducted into the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

Dr. Powell was a member of several professional , which included the Southeastern District Dental Society, the Georgia Dental Association and the American Dental Association. Locally, he was a member of the Statesboro First United Methodist Church, where he held several offices, which included Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was a founding director of the First Southern National Bank and a member of the Statesboro Rotary Club. Dr. Powell was a member of the Hearts and Hands group which provided dental care for the underprivileged and he led two dental mission trips to Brazil. He was a Dean Day Smith Recipient and the 2013 Rotary Citizen of the Year. Preceding him in death were his mother and father, Eunice

Survivors include his wife, Pam Powell of Statesboro; his children, Alison P. (John) McNeill, John Powell and Will Powell, all of Atlanta, Ga; his sister Sally P. (Anthony) Waters; his brother, Hub (Cissy)Powell; his grandson, Jack McNeill; nephews, Brad (Alison) Powell, Wes Powell, Jeff Powell, Loy Waters and Lee Waters; and two great nieces, Mary Mac and Emme Powell.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Statesboro First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jimmy Cason officiating. A private family interment will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Andy Cichelli and his staff, Dr. Bobby Benson, and Dr. Mark Taylor for the exceptional care they provided.
