Birth: unknown
Death: unknown

husband of Jane and son of Sarah (Jameson) and William Belcher, Jr.. It is not believed that he had any children and little is known of his family. The fragments that survive include one photograph, the frame of which had a small tag added ca. 1940 with "Uncle Richard Belcher" and on removing the photograph from the frame it is inscribed on the back "with R. J. Belcher's fondest love to his sister Sally." The second clue to his past is a silver cigar case, engraved with a crest and the initials "R.J.B., The Giaour, 1846." This cigar case was given to John Aliexander McArthur with a note from his mother on the back of one of her Tiffany calling cards, "Take this cigar case of your father's dear son..." Research at the New York City Public Libaray in the mid 1960's proved that the crest was the Belcher crest and that he was in the Royal Meath in India ca. 1846, which gives every reason to believe that this cigar case was his and that after his death his widow sent this as a keepsake to his sister in America, who in turn gave it to her son-in-law, John Cawley McArthur, hence the description on the note above. What connection if any of the popularity of orientalia at the time and Lord Byron's poem "The Giaour" written in 1813 may have to the use of the term is unknown. It is known that the term was in use to refer to "Christian British officers" in India local usage literal translation was "Christian infidel" while the anglo took the meaning to be closer to "hero."
