Birth: May 5, 1935
Canyon County
Idaho, USA
Death: Apr. 12, 2013
Ada County
Idaho, USA

Preceded in death by both parents, brothers Emmanuel and Daniel and sister, Dorothy. Survived by wife, daughter, 1 sister, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dewey was a farm boy, the youngest child of Reuben and Irene Henshaw, who started riding with the local Boise area horse trainer, James Nazworthy, and got to ride on several Northwest tracks, along with such greats as Eddie Arcaro and Bill Shoemaker and knew Idaho local retired jockey Gary Stevens.
On Labor Day weekend 1956, in his final race as an apprentice at 21 years of age, Dewey's mount clipped the heels of the horse in front of him and Dewey was thrown. He did several somersaults and landed each time on his head. He was in a coma for 40 days with severe brain injuries and not expected to ever walk, talk or see again if he DID survive! He dodged the odds and did come out of the coma, but was badly handicapped the rest of his life. I have a copy of what may have been his last race BEFORE the accident race: winning race #3 on September 4, 1956 on "Owyhee Bill" at the Oregon State Fair.
Dewey was only able to do menial work once he had recovered and never able to hold a job for long due to his damaged eyesight.. One of his last jobs was an assistant surveyor for the Davenport firm in Caldwell, Idaho.
Dewey married Inez Marie Lowe and they had a daughter, Marla, in October 1964. They were later divorced and he married Bettie J. (Woods) Darrah in June 1993.
After desired cremation, private burial at Canyon Hill Cemetery alongside his parents occurred.
You are now free, Dewey, to ride your two favorite mounts: FAIR KATHLEEN and NO WAR (both owned & trained by Jim Nazworthy), anytime. God speed, Uncle. I love you.

(*NOTE: Some records have his name listed as "WILFORD DEWEY"; I was always knew my uncle as DEWEY WILFRED.)
